Holly was 11 years old when her mum started drinking due to an abusive relationship. Although that relationship ended, the drinking didn’t; it just got worse.

Holly spent much of her teens looking after and helping her mother, but also living with this ‘dirty horrible secret’, as she describes it. As the years passed her mother became very ill due to the effects of alcohol and was hospitalised many times.

By the time her mother died (as a direct result of alcohol), Holly had her own son who was deeply affected by seeing his grandmother so ill. Holly found solace as well as advice and support through Alcohol Concern.
