In recent years the government has acknowledged the need for greater action to reduce alcohol-related harm in the United Kingdom. Yet despite the publication of the Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy (2004) and subsequent tools meant to enable local authorities to mitigate the impact of alcohol misuse Alcohol Concern has discovered that in many areas alcohol misuse remains a lesser priority for those commissioning health services. A recent review of Local Area Agreements revealed that despite virtually all of them identifying alcohol misuse as an issue that needs to be addressed, more than half have no alcohol specific outcomes while 75% fail to address health harms caused by alcohol concern.
