Alcohol Concern?s Parenting and Alcohol Project launches national training programme for alcohol professionals and parenting specialists.

The Parenting and Alcohol Project aims to protect and improve the quality of life and opportunities of the children of problem-drinking parents. It will do this by working to strengthen and develop the capacity of alcohol and parenting professionals to work with parents who have alcohol-related problems.

The project has trained around 40 professionals to deliver the programmes nationally, and between January and July 2006 it will be offering training to alcohol and parenting professionals on working with problem-drinking parents. Alcohol workers will receive training on parenting issues and professionals who work with parents will receive training on alcohol awareness.

Commenting on the launch of Parenting Project training programme, Don Shenker, Alcohol Concern?s Director of Policy and Services, said:

"The lives of around a million children in the UK are seriously affected by parental alcohol problems. Research has indicated that the conflict and disharmony brought about by problem drinking can have a very detrimental effect on children. One of the problems faced by problem-drinking parents is that alcohol and parenting teams often work separately and the needs of children can sometimes get missed out. We hope that this training programme will really make a difference and enable alcohol professionals and parenting professionals to work more effectively with problem-drinking parents."

One-day training courses will be held across the country between January and June 2006.
