Mandatory code gets Lords assent
Tuesday 16 March 2010
The government's Mandatory Code on Alcohol Sales which will eliminate the worst practices in alcohol sales will come into effect from the beginning of April.
The new code which will see 'irresponsible' drinks promotions (such as all you can drink for £10) banned, ensure that all premises provide consumers with free tap water and stop pubs and clubs from using 'dentist chairs' or similar gimmicks which might encourage excessive consumption.
In additon from October 2010 all premises will have to have a working proof-of-age scheme to reduce the number of children served and ensure that small measures of wine, beer and spirits are available.
There was some concern that the Lords would block the code from coming into effect but after a healthy debate the upper house passed the motion.
The new regulations will begin from 6 April and its passing represents a victory for Alcohol Concern who has campaigned for clearer laws that empower local authorities to be able to prevent irreponsible alcohol sales in their area.
