White Paper outlines plans for the reform of the NHS
Monday 12 July 2010
Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley, has outlined the coalition government's proposals for reforming the NHS in England.
The White Paper 'Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS' details how "power will be devolved from Whitehall to patients and professionals." Groups of GPs will be given the responsibility for commissioning care for their patients. Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts will be phased out. The proposals will have a substantial impact on all services commissioned and/or provided by the NHS - including alcohol services. Read more.
Following the publication of the White Paper, the Department of Health published 'Transaparency in outcomes - a framework for the NHS' which seeks the views of healthcare professionals, the public and other interested parties on the detailed proposals. The framework includes a set of national outcome goals which patients and the public can use to judge the overall performance of the NHS in the future. The consultation was published on 19 July and closes on 10 October 2010. Read more.
