Putting the children first is an Alcohol Concern booklet for parents and families who are worried about the effect that drinking has on family life.

NSPCC toolkit to protect children and young people

Rory
This is a learning resource developed by Alcohol Focus Scotland. It is in the form of an age appropriate story book and tackles the issue of harm caused to children because of parental alcohol problems.

The Rory Resource is now being piloted in ten primary schools and five alcohol support agencies in West Lothian.

Working with the Children & Families of Problem Alcohol Users: A Toolkit
This toolkit was developed by the Mental Health Research and Development Unit at the University of Bath to provide guidance on developing and delivering services to children and families who are affected by substance misuse.

Building Resilience in Families Under Stress is a new handbook, published as part of National Children's Bureau's toolkit series, which explores how professionals can support parenting more effectively in families affected by parental mental health difficulties and/or substance misuse. EACH Asian Women, Domestic Violence and Mental Health toolkit
Funded by Government Office for London, this toolkit was developed to disseminate culturally-appropriate best practice and enable better care of Asian women and their children who suffer physical and mental health consequences of living with domestic violence and abuse. NHS guidance on domestic abuse
As a response to the DV Crime and Victims Act (2004), The Department of Health developed a publication, 'responding to domestic abuse: A handbook for healthcare professionals' in 2005. You can download this handbook from the Department of Health.

Relate - Good Practice Guidance Handbook
As part of Bridging to Change programme, Relate has produced this handbook for Relate Centres wishing to develop domestic violence and abuse prevention programmes (DVA-PP). Download the guidance.

Stella Project Toolkit This toolkit provides practitioners and service managers working with domestic violence and substance misuse issues with the basic knowledge & skills required to respond to service users safely and appropriately. It also provides sample policy documents, assessment forms and safety plans. Stella has also produced toolkits aimed at Faith communities and a briefing on working with perpetrators, available from the AVA Project

Tools for Change: A new way of working with families and carers is a toolkit recently launched in Australia by the Network of Alcohol and other Drugs Agencies (NADA). The toolkit has been developed to assist non government drug and alcohol services in working with the families and carers of clients with co-existing mental health and drug and alcohol problems that are accessing their services. The toolkit will be available for download on the NADA website.

This article looks at potential safety issues raised by family, network or couple-based interventions where there is evidence of domestic abuse and offers a number of suggestions for how network therapies can remain safe.
