Safe, Sensible, Social: Selling alcohol responsibly: a consultation on the new code of practice for alcohol retailers

Home Office, August 2009

The consultation on alcohol sales, also known as the 'mandatory code consultation', suggested changes to the law regarding alcohol sales. These changes were outlined in the consultation as a new 'code of practice' which would apply to all alcohol retailers if brought into force. The idea behind the code is to ensure those who sell and supply alcohol do so responsibly, in order to prevent alcohol-related crime, disorder and nuisance.

The consultation sought views from members of the public, those who retail alcohol and represent the alcohol retail industry, licensing authorities and the police who have to enforce licensing policy, and health bodies and the third sector who have to deal with the impact of alcohol-related harm.

The consultation was published on 21 May 2009 and closed on 14 August 2009.
