What we do

Alcohol Concern exists to reduce the negative impact alcohol can have on communities, families and individuals. We do this by influencing policy at the highest level, improving practice across the country through training and innovative projects and providing first class information to the public. Alcohol Concern believes that a twin approach is needed to tackle what is becoming one of the biggest public health problems in the UK: we need more support for individuals and their families who experience problems with alcohol and better regulation and monitoring of the drinks industry.

Our Strategic Plan (2011-2014) sets out our vision for sustainability and growth, our plans to support and develop our membership and how we will continue to campaign for policy change to prevent and reduce alcohol harm.

Policy and Campaigns
We promote the development and implementation of national and local alcohol policy on the basis of the best available evidence and through consultation with our members.  We lobby decision-makers and produce reports, briefings and position statements on a wide range of issues. Membership
We are an independent and powerful voice for our membership.  We keep our members up-to-date with news and policy in the alcohol field; we send them publications and information, invite them to networking events and seek their views and opinions on policy and practice issues. Find out more about becoming a member of Alcohol Concern.

Projects and Good Practice
Alcohol Concern develops and manages projects that build the capacity of the sector, encourage good practice in the field and create and promote better solutions to tackle alcohol problems. Find out more about our projects and how they are helping to shape the future of alcohol services.

Raising Awareness
We actively work to raise alcohol awareness and to encourage the development of services and support for people with alcohol-related problems.  We work closely with our members and other agencies to ensure we understand issues of concern to the sector; we keep members of parliament informed about the key issues relating to alcohol misuse; we run an annual Alcohol Awareness Week Campaign to raise the profile of alcohol misuse amongst the public, the media, politicians and decision-makers and work with the media to promote our work and raise awareness of alcohol-related issues.

Publications and Information
We provide quality information on alcohol and alcohol-related harm.  This includes our members' magazine, Straight Talk and our members' news e-bulletin, Straight Talk News. Find out more about our publications.

Consultancy and training
We work to develop the knowledge and skills of practitioners supporting people with alcohol-related problems and operate a specialist consultancy service for commissioners, local authorities and Primary Care Trusts.  Find out more about our consultancy and training work.
